CX/Gravel Tire Test: Schwalbe G-One R Pro (black) 40

We've known the G-One R for a while now and we tested the G-One R Super Race in 2021 and it was one of those tires that simply couldn't convince us. Schwalbe made a big update to the G-One line and they now come in Pro versions that are a big upgrade over the old Super versions. A new RX version was also added to the G-One range and we now have the G-One R as the all-round version, RS as the fast semi-slick, and the coarser RX as an option for rougher conditions.

Like the other versions in the renewed Pro range, the G-One R also includes the updated Addix Race compound, which we tested and found to be very fast on both the new G-One RS Pro and G-One RX Pro tires. The casing is now also the new Pro version, and the main improvement here is a wider puncture protection strip that protects a larger part of the tire.

We have already tested several gravel tires from Schwalbe's new Pro line: G-One RS Pro, G-One RS Pro 50, G-One RX Pro, and they have all performed very well in our testing.

As with the other new models from the G-One Pro line, Schwalbe avoids offering too many different versions. You can no longer choose from different casings and compounds, but you do still have the option of transparent or black sidewalls, which is a change we still welcome.

The G-One R Pro is available in the 35-622, 40-622, 45-622, and 50-622 sizes, which should meet the needs of 99% of gravel bikers looking for this type of tire. We tested the 40-622 version with black sidewalls and will compare it to the old G-One R Super Race, new G-One RS Pro, new G-One RX Pro, and a wide range of similar tires.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Conclusion

The new G-One R Pro is a huge upgrade over the old G-One R Super Race. The big improvement can be found in the rolling resistance department as the new Pro version of the G-One R rolls 30% faster than the old Super Race version. The much lower rolling resistance is a welcome improvement for the G-One R as we're quite sure people that are interested in this kind of tire care about rolling resistance a lot.

We're happy to see we have another new Pro tire from Schwalbe that shows a strong performance in our tests and they are now competitive tires. We see a great lineup of G-One tires with the R, RS, and RX, that should provide gravel bikers with ample choice to cover their individual needs.
