CX/Gravel Tire Test: Schwalbe G-One Overland Super Ground SpeedGrip 50

The Schwalbe G-One Overland is another new addition to the G-One family of gravel bike tires. The G-One Overland comes with a versatile tread pattern, and Schwalbe describes this tire as a 'gravel tire for commuters, adventurers, and e-bikers'. The G-One Overland should be excellent on asphalt thanks to its tread pattern comprising closely spaced, stable blocks. The downside of this kind of tread pattern can be found in muddy conditions as the tread will fill up quickly.

The Overland comes with Schwalbe's tubeless-ready 67 TPI Super Ground casing and Addix SpeedGrip compound that both can be seen as a good mixture between absolute speed and protection/grip. Although the Super Ground casing is quite tough, it doesn't come with additional puncture protection under the tread, which means it mostly relies on the tubeless sealant to seal small punctures.

Although Schwalbe recommends this tire for commuters, adventurers, and e-bikers, we're not sure we would recommend this tire for use on bikes that do not allow for easy removal of the wheels in case of a puncture. Our tests show the tread puncture resistance isn't up to touring bike standards, and there is a real risk you might end up with a puncture that you can't fix quickly on that kind of bike.

The G-One Overland was first released in the 50-622 (700x50c) size only, but we noticed Schwalbe has recently released 40-622 and 45-622 versions as well. We've tested the 50-622 version, and although we test most other gravel bike tires in the 40-622 size, we will compare it to the best gravel bike tires with a similar knob height.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Conclusion

When taking into account the Schwalbe G-One Overland's tread pattern, it shows a solid and balanced performance in our tests. The main weakness is the tread's low puncture resistance, which makes this tire unsuitable for use on bikes that do not allow for easy removal of the wheels. Rolling resistance also comes in very strong, although it's not the fastest tire out there.

Another strong point is the performance in our hard surface wet grip tests. The Addix SpeedGrip compound, combined with the closely spaced tread blocks that prevent flexing under load, works exceptionally well in the wet grip test of the center of the tire. In the edge test, the grip is a bit lower as more of the higher and more widely spaced edge knobs are in contact with the test surface.

It looks like Schwalbe has upped their game lately, as all their tires we've tested over the past 12 months show strong performance in our tests.
