- Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR 28
(100% is best)
The tubeless-ready Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR has been available for some time now, and we already tested the 25 mm version (read our review) right after its release in 2021. Although we found the S TR version of the Grand Prix 5000 to be a step back over the previous tubeless 5000 TL version in some of our tests, it still is pretty much the most popular tubeless-ready road bike tire.

Over the past few years, we've seen a trend towards bigger road bike tires that seems amplified by the movement towards tubeless road bike tires. This trend towards bigger road bike tires forced us to relax the size requirements for road bike tires, and we now allow road bike tires with a width of up to 29 mm in the road bike section. After this change, our Pro Members were quick to vote for the 28 mm version of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR as one of the first "big" tires in the road bike section.
As most of you know, the Grand Prix 5000 S TR is available in the 25, 28, 30, and 32 mm sizes, and we already tested all of those back in 2021 and compared them in our GP 5000 S TR Comparison. For this test, we ordered a fresh sample of the 28-622 version, which makes this review somewhat of a quality control test to see if the latest batch of the 5000 S TR still offers the same performance as the initial batch.

The Road Bike section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load. |

Conclusion
- Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR 28
(100% is best)
The latest version of the 28-622 Grand Prix 5000 S TR shows very similar performance to our original 25-622 sample that we bought and tested 14 months earlier, which is a good thing from a quality control perspective. We see some marginal differences that fall within the margin of error of the tests. On average, our sample of the 28-622 rolls slightly faster (at lower air pressures), offers marginally less puncture resistance and provides a bit more wet grip.
At 265 grams (spec = 280 grams), this fresh sample of the 28-622 version comes in just 10 grams heavier than our initial 25-622 sample that came in at 255 grams (spec = 250 grams). The additional weight is in the tread thickness, as our 25-622 sample has a tread thickness of 2.3 mm, while the 28-622 sample has a tread thickness of just 2.1 mm. This is a normal variation, and as our Grand Prix 5000 S TR Comparison shows, the average tread thickness of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR is 2.2 mm.
Choosing between the 25 or 28 mm version of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR comes down to the preferences of the person making this choice. For an even easier comparison between the 25 and 28 mm version of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR, jump over to our comparison section: Grand Prix 5000 S TR 25 vs 28 mm.
