CX/Gravel Tire Test: Schwalbe Pro One TLE Addix 34

The current version of the Schwalbe Pro One TLE that comes with the Addix Race compound has been around for a while as Schwalbe launched it at the end of 2019. New for 2022 is a bigger 34-622 version of the Pro One TLE that's a welcome addition to the line-up as more and more riders are moving to larger tires. The 34-622 version might be a bit extreme when you're purely riding on asphalt, but it's an exciting tire for gravel bike use.

With the addition of the 34-622 version, the Pro One TLE is now available in a wide range of sizes that should suit most riders. If you're looking for 20-inch or 26-inch road bike tires, the Pro One TLE still seems to be the best choice, as most other manufacturers stick strictly to the 28" (622) sizes with their high-end road bike tires.

The 34-622 version of the Pro One TLE is available with black sidewalls or transparent (brown) sidewalls. This is a test of the transparent sidewall version, but we don't expect there to be much of a difference from a performance point of view.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Conclusion

Like the 25 mm version of the Pro One TLE, the 34 mm version comes a bit short when compared to the 32 mm Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR (read our review), which is its main rival. We're also not impressed by the actual size of the 34 mm Pro One TLE as we measured it just 0.7 mm wider than the 32 mm Grand Prix 5000 S TR and we feel it should have been at least 32.5 mm wide on our 17.8 mm inner width test rim.

Our wet grip test (data available through Pro View for now) clearly shows the Pro One TLE comes with a dual compound with a harder center compound and a softer edge compound. Whether this will be an advantage or disadvantage is up to the rider, and the type of riding, as the harder center compound results in quite a bit less center grip, but the grip when leaned over on the edge of the tire is about as good as it gets.
