Continental launched the tube-type version of the Grand Prix 5000 in 2018, and it's still the go-to road bike tire today. The Grand Prix 5000 was a revolutionary tire in 2018, pushing the competition back to the drawing board, and it's taken a couple of years for them to catch up or surpass the performance of the Grand Prix 5000.

Continental initially launched the Grand Prix 5000 in the 23, 25, 28, and 32 mm (rare for that time) sizes. They later added the 30 mm size to the lineup, and that size is a special case in the Grand Prix 5000 lineup, as it comes with an E-50 rating for electric bikes that go up to 50 km/h. That E-50 rating isn't just a small addition, and it makes us curious if the 30 mm version of the Grand Prix 5000 has seen a redesign of some sort.
Let's roll on to the test results and compare the 30 mm version of the Grand Prix 5000 to the 25 mm version that we tested in 2018 (read our review), the tubeless-ready Grand Prix 5000 S TR (read our review), the Grand Prix 5000 All Season TR (read our review), and a bunch of other tube-type tires from competing brands.

The Road Bike section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load. |

Conclusion
- Continental Grand Prix 5000 E-50 30
(100% is best)
Is there a difference between the 30 mm E-50 rated Grand Prix 5000 and the other sizes of the Grand Prix 5000? Yes, our test results indicate the casing is the same, but the compound mix is a bit different: the 30 mm version does a bit better in the wet grip tests, and that comes at the cost of a slightly higher rolling resistance. This trade-off makes sense for high-speed e-bikes as you simply aren't going to notice the 4-5 watts of extra rolling resistance on those bikes, while you definitely will notice it when you've run out of grip.
When it comes to tube-type tires, the Grand Prix 5000 is still one of the best choices out if you value overall performance. The addition of the 30 mm version makes the Grand Prix 5000 even more versatile, as you'll now have an in-between option that works best if you value wet grip over rolling resistance.
