CX/Gravel Tire Test: Schwalbe G-One Allround Super Ground SpeedGrip 40

The Schwalbe G-One Allround is probably one of the most popular gravel bike tires and some people wondered why we didn't add it to our CX/Gravel section yet. The reason is that at the time we launched the CX/Gravel section, we knew new versions of the G-One were just around the corner. These new versions are now available and we're starting out with the Allround version which full name now is: G-One Allround Evolution Super Ground TLE Addix SpeedGrip.

We already tested the G-One Ultrabite (read our review) a couple of months back and although that was a MicroSkin TLE version and not a Super Ground TLE version, we don't think the differences in construction are that big (specs are different but we base it on the Ultrabite we have here). The Ultrabite didn't perform all that well in our tests which we attributed to it being optimized to provide lots of grip with its big knobs (for a gravel bike tire).

The G-One Allround is something else and definitely is a tire that is meant to compete with the fastest tires in the CX/Gravel section. Unlike the G-One Speed (read our review), the G-One Allround still has somewhat of an off-road tread pattern with the many small knobs spread evenly over the tread. We've tested the 40-622 version to make it easier to compare to the other G-One versions.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Conclusion

We find the results of this version of the G-One Allround shocking. Schwalbe once was the pioneer of fast-rolling off-road tires with their PaceStar compound on which they built their reputation. With the launch of the Addix compounds back in 2017, this all changed and things got messy. Back in 2017/2018, we already found there to be a lot of variation between different tires with the Addix Speed and SpeedGrip compounds.

It looks like quality control at Schwalbe just isn't up to par anymore. The latest version of the G-One Allround is slower than the G-One Ultrabite, which just doesn't make sense. We suspect something isn't going as planned in the compound mixing department. We don't recommend this tire as the difference with the Continental Terra Speed TR compare is just too big when you care about performance.
