Vittoria Peyote XC Race road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

The 2024 Peyote is a new tire from Vittoria with a completely different look and feel than the old one. Vittoria has been hard at work over the last few years, and they've gone through numerous design and name changes in their mountain bike lineup. The 2024 Peyote XC Race, and the Mezcal XC Race, now come with Vittoria's latest advancements, and our first test results indicate Vittoria has hit the sweet spot when it comes to speed and (wet) grip.

The easiest way to recognize Vittoria's latest mountain bike tires is by the "Race Formulation" logo. That is a new addition, and it means the tire comes with the latest Graphene +Silica compound and 60 TPI tubeless-ready Race casing. Another easy way to recognize these tires is the Vittoria logo printed on a bright red background that gives the tire a modern look.

Another change is the sidewall color of the colored sidewall version, which has gone from tan to brown and gives the tire a more classic look. A black sidewall version is also available, and that's also different from Vittoria's older tires, which were often available with grey or tan sidewalls only.

We've tested the brown sidewall version in the 29x2.4 size, which is the only available size currently available. The brown sidewall version also seems superior when it comes to weight, as its specified weight is 10 grams lower than the black sidewall version.

The new Vittoria Peyote XC Race is now the best-performing mountain bike tire in our hard surface wet grip test, yet it still rolls very fast. Vittoria claims the Race Formulation tires are designed to be the absolute fastest option to get from point A to B, and when we look at the combined grip and speed, we can confirm it might very well be the quickest option when grip, as well as speed, is required.

The puncture resistance of the tread is also better than most other comparable tires, but the sidewalls are slightly weaker. We do think that over the past ten years, the sidewalls of tubeless-ready tires have come a long way, and the air sealing capabilities have improved when compared to tires with the same sidewall thickness from 10 years ago. You might have to look into tires with tougher sidewalls when you get regular sidewall cuts.

Vittoria's latest Peyote XC Race mountain bike tire with Race Formulation looks like a significant improvement over their previous tires in this category, and we're pretty sure the Mezcal XC Race and future XC Race tires with Race Formulation will be just as good.
