CX/Gravel Tire Test: Schwalbe G-One Speed Super Ground V-Guard SpeedGrip 40

We don't think we'll have to explain what the Schwalbe G-One Speed is made for as its name makes that completely clear. We've waited for the latest version of the G-One Speed to become available and its full name now is: Schwalbe G-One Speed Evolution Super Ground V-Guard TLE with Addix SpeedGrip compound.

People familiar with the Schwalbe naming scheme will know that this is their best performing version (Evolution) of the G-One Speed. The Super Ground TLE casing is a new tubeless-ready design that contains a puncture protection layer that runs from bead to bead. We're a bit surprised the G-One Speed (unlike the other new versions of the G-One) comes with an additional V-Guard layer under the tread. The Addix SpeedGrip compound is a compound we already know as it's used on a lot of other Schwalbe off-road tires.

The G-One Speed comes with many tiny knobs spread evenly across the tread which should provide a bit more grip than a fully slick tread pattern. We have to give Schwalbe credits for their naming scheme as they now have 4 versions of the G-One with very clear names: G-One Speed, G-One Allround (read our review), G-One Bite, and G-One Ultrabite (read our review).

We've tested the 40-622 version of the Speed to stay in line with the other versions of the G-One we've already tested.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Conclusion

The latest version of the G-One Speed is another disappointment for us after last week's test of the G-One Allround. With its 0.3 mm knob height, the G-One Speed is virtually a slick tire and we expected it to come close to the Panaracer GravelKing and Continental Terra Speed in the rolling resistance tests. We don't think the design of the Speed, with its high tread thickness, V-Guard layer under the tread, and subsequently, high weight and rolling resistance are that of a performance gravel tire.

If you want a cut-resistant gravel tire, the G-One Speed might be ok. We do recommend you to take a look at our CX/Gravel overview as you can find better performing tires when cut resistance is your main requirement.

Based on our test results and comparing to other tires, we can't recommend this latest version of the G-One Speed.
