Schwalbe G-One R Super Race 40 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

The Schwalbe G-One R Super Race is the latest addition to the Schwalbe G-One line of gravel bike tires. The G-One R is interesting as it's a bit different than the other (Super Ground casing) versions of the G-One (Speed, Allround, Bite, UltraBite) that were launched last year and didn't perform all that well in our tests.

On paper, the G-One R should have a significantly lower rolling resistance as it makes use of Schwalbe's "Super Race" casing and "Addix Race" compound instead of the "Super Ground" casing and "Addix SpeedGrip" compound. Schwalbe's website also indicates this should be their fastest tire as they rate it 100% on rolling efficiency.

Even though the G-One R should be the fastest G-One, the center and edge knobs are bigger than those found on both the G-One Speed and G-One Allround. The tread pattern also looks like it'll grip well in a very large range of conditions both on and off the road. Muddy conditions might be a bridge too far though as we're not sure it'll clear mud all that well.

At the moment, the G-One R is available in 2 sizes: 40-622 (700x40c), and 45-622 (700x45c). We've tested the 40-622 version as that probably still is the most widely used gravel bike tire size.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Even though the G-One R proves to be the fastest G-One, we expected much more from the G-One R in at least the rolling resisance tests. In our other tests we also haven't been able to find many differences when compared to the other G-Ones with the Super Ground and SpeedGrip compound. We expected this to be a good improvement over the other versions of the G-One but the differences are marginal at best.

When compared to similar gravel bike tires from other brands, the G-One R ends up somewhere in the middle of our overview table. Unfortunately, Schwalbe just doesn't make the fastest (off-road) tires any more which used to be their specialty back in the Triple Star compound era. As we've seen before, there just isn't much of a difference between the different flavors (Addix Race, Addix Speed, Addix SpeedGrip) of the Addix compound.
